After 7 unforgettable years, highs and lows, of trips and staycations, of projects, homeworks and tests, Busy Boy has finally completed Grade School.

Busy Boy's grade school was comprised of learning and discovering himself. How to relate with other boys, with responsibilities. I may have wanted him to be like me, all reading and study (ehem!) but he's also Dad's son, just play and fun. So, I hope we were able to strike a balance. Being an OC, its hard for me to let the reigns loose but I have to. Or else, I'm setting him up for a more difficult life.

Its such a bittersweet moment for all of us and I knew I was going to cry at some point during the ceremony. I am happy that all the people that helped me through this were with Dad and I during the occassion. Auntie A, Lola and Nanuy C.
So we will take a break from school for the next 3 months, before we embark on a new journey - middle school. But that's a whole different post.Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-62192550934211730612013-04-26T00:18:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:37:54.348+08:0041st Birthday

With sore legs and chilled bones, we were all up late on the last day of year. Since our apartment had no stored food, we had brunch at the Fairwood in the unbelievable 10minute away Ikea Shatin branch. The lady was all Chinese and Sister just ordered for us since all we could do was gesture and point.

Ikea is one store I can't get enough of. And it was nice that Mama was able to finally shop to her heart's content. Ikea is a home store that sells anything and everything you need to build and furnish your home.

For this trip, one of our To Dos to replenish our 'down to 3 plates' dinnerware which we got from Ikea The Curve (KL) almost 5 years ago. The dark gray color was no longer available so we had to settle with a lighter gray shade. And it was such a joy to discover they also sell in retail, since we didn't need the entire set. And I got a new egg timer, tealights and a can opener. One happy Mushamommy here.

After spending most of the midday in Ikea and New Town Mall (tried out St Alps black tea and got disappointed with Page One bookstore as the boys went to Toy Kingdom), we had an early dinner/late merienda at 5pm. We then decided to go to the mainland and check out the activities there. Since it was New Year's Eve and we were in Chinese territory, I thought the celebration would be spectacular. Well, I thought wrong. We were lucky the cab driver allowed all 5 of us in one car, but he did remind us that going to Harbour City would be 'congest' because of the festivities.

At Victoria Harbour, I finally got to cross out another To Do which was to buy MAC powder. Its something that I hope I won't have to buy in the Philippines.. Its to expensive, compared to buying abroad. Too bad I did not bring my used compacts and avail of the 'Back to Mac' promo. Then we had to walk thru the Harbour City mall to get to the viewing deck, where it was filled with yuppies, teens, couples waiting for the Symphony of Lights. This is one show I won't miss when we go back.

After the disappointing 1 hour show of lights, we took the bus back to Shatin and the family decided to have a New Year's Eve dinner at Pho 24. Its a New Year's Eve like no other because there was less fire works and we were eating out a good family dinner. Best bonding moment!

Happy New Year!!Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-14672904276143216662013-01-01T09:17:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:41:22.458+08:00

After 6 years, we finally returned to HongKong for some family bonding and R&R It may be the same country but we are now older and there are more places to go to. This is the first time we will be celebrating New Year's Eve outside of our home which makes everything all new. Since we were free rolling it, I was pretty much hoping all plans and wishes could be accommodated.

We got stuck in the airport for about an hour to sort out some kinks. Dad's phone had no service and the problem of where to leave our bags. So we chilled.

After an express train ride from the airport (HK$60) we had lunch and spent the early afternoon at Tung Chung, the outlet mall. Sans Levi's, Timberland and Giordano, most of the stores were not familiar to me. With a shopping not really a priority in this trip, we limited the shopping to essentials, like Dad's pants. Mom bought me and Sister cool wraps from Giordano and her pasalubong to our Aunt. Food was ok, filling and yummy enough which had us raving to go back. The dining area was just unbelievably full. And no one practices CLAYGO. We're on a budget so nothing expensive in this trip.

Up next was to go to Ngong Ping, where we fell in line for hours going to and from the mountain. But it was a new place I haven't been to and we had a lot of photos. The cable ride home though, had us literally freeze our butts off. We were prepared for cold weather but not freezing weather. It was our first time to ride a cable car at night that I didn't enjoy because I was too busy keeping Busy Boy warm.

Our apartment was luckily in the same island of Lantau but we had to leave our luggage in the airport. Dinner once more at Food Channel plus two bus trips later, we were at New Town Plaza mall in Shatin and walking home to an almost bare residence. Fatigue got the better of us and we did fall asleep but I woke up to COLD. As in! Need to do something about it, soon.Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-90933673508641850002012-12-23T21:55:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:17:27.951+08:00Family Xmas Party 2012With no one really organizing our event this year, we had lunch with my Medina relatives for our annual Christmas get together. Not much exchange of gifts, just a schedule for the pot luck, no games lined up and worst of all, not much in attendance. To a point that even we had to leave early to visit Dad's relatives for their Christmas gathering instead.

Since it was our last get together for the year, I was still happy and winging it.. After all, it's not really about the material things but its the gathering of family. It was nice to see my Auntie Baby, my Uncle Ed and my usual suspect cousins haha..

Hopefully next year? Maybe in a different venue hopefully? 😃Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-56281123193311780812012-12-22T08:05:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:17:27.878+08:00Papa's 6thFinally I get a break from work and relax a little bit with a mini Christmas break. We kickstart our 4 day freedom by attending dawn mass and also commemorate Papa's 6th death anniversary. It was a good feeling to be with family as we remember today. We were all up at 4am that sad day, including, then almost 4 year old Busy Boy.

In the 6 years that Papa has been gone, our lives did continue. But there will always be that moment, when I wish he was still here. I imagine, what would his retirement been like. What would he have said about stuff.. such as an encounter with Busy Boy, a new book, a trip to Fully Booked, a province to visit, politics, traffic, basketball, the Bible and even, new local artists. There is always that 'I wonder' statement within me.

But reality always has an ugly head to rear. My Papa is no longer here and I could just keep all these in me, until we see each other again. For now, I will learn from the lessons he has taught me and be that daughter he is proud of. For now, I will take care and nurture his grandson, whom he has tried to survive for and keep him alive in a Busy Boy's memories. For now, I will look after my mom and my sister and our home.

In Memoriam
Dr. John A. Our 6th Lantern Parade.

It was our first time to be scheduled in the last session (3-5pm) but Dad and I are always there to support and cheer for Busy Boy. 4-C in yellow.

The good thing about being last, the weather was cooler and the food stalls were not as cramped. This event, the school put up chairs, tables under tents for parents to eat and wait on for their grade levels turn.

The host said that the Grade 4 parents were most in attendance he's seen all afternoon! Talk about a whole bunch of stage parents like me! :)

Dance music was Gangnam by Psy.

Until next year!Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-92141166895858536862012-12-05T17:50:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:54:41.857+08:00Thank You TreatThis year, I decided to start something new in thanking my team mates for a wonderful year with what we all love best.. eating out!! December may be too busy and we have a long weekend ahead of us so November 29 it was, after a long day of bookings. It was my way of thanking them for a job well done, for putting up with me and for pep talk for the coming year end hurrah.

After careful planning, whispering and texting, my team and I went to Seafood Island at RG for a yummy dinner which we capped with a Starbucks drink afterwards. To the regular night out goer, it may seem such a blah night out but I was going for my team becoming closer and sharing more experiences will help achieve that. Hopefully, this one will. The only downside to it was, we couldn't take a photo to avoid issues. Maybe there will be other ways next time.

It set me back a couple of grand but if it means a smooth sailing voyage in future, less stress for me.
We asked my mom to join us in our stay and open up this long weekend. The hotel was beside my office and ergo, near our home for that so close but so far away feeling :) Finally tried out this Staycation phenomena..

Coming from BGC and HMR earlier in the day, it was almost evening by the time we checked in. The entrance looks big and grand but its actually cramped. It can only accommodate a vehicle at a time to drop their guests in front of the lobby. After a few minutes wait, we were pleased to find out that we've been upgraded to a 3-bedroom suite. We only needed 2 rooms but the extra space was more than enough. :)

After wows in the room we went to the indoor pool for Busy Boy. Mom and I chatted the hours away. Afterwards, we had dinner at Mozu Cafe behind the hotel. I've spent countless lunch hours in this cafe, but it was my first time to eat at night and with my family. I had the advantage of knowing the menu, that Dad ended up eating a fourth of my lechon kawali! :)

Back at the hotel with my boys asleep and Mom watching telenovela, I was lounging by our big, unused dining table.. I had a midnight snack while overcoming my planner problem. It's my favorite dessert.. the frozen brazo! I never fail not to order :)

Mornings was just in time for their breakfast buffet. But with Dad and my mom not eating much, I really couldn't go all out. However, it was a joy to watch my son devour those locally produced yogurt from Hacienda Macalauan. First time I've seen and tasted them..and it was love at first taste for both me and Busy Boy.

And so the hunt begins.. for that yummy mango sago and nata banana flavors!

We went back to our rooms and checked out way earlier than 12nn. Then it was off to one of my all time favorite places to go after that... SM hypermart for some mandatory items needed.

We spent our staycation exactly how we'd spend it at home...nothing out of the box, just a few food discoveries. I have nothing against the hotel or anything, but it'll be a while before we'd do this again. We'd rather go out... a new place and all.

The suffix -dectomy means removal so, you pretty much get the idea what hubby was in for. :)

Our experience was actually pleasant. First off, we had a kick-ass HMO card courtesy of RMD (one could hope that RCBC can offer even half). Thank you for the awesome coverage. It really was a privilege. :)

Next, the overnight stay was sort of a bonding time for us. Busy Boy likened it to living a hotel / condominium unit. You have your own world inside that room and a totally different one just a few steps beyond the door. We bought food from the food court. The HMO had its own wing on the 12th floor, and Dad was even upgraded to Superior room. It was ok, but I am so glad we don't live in one.

Except for the nurse check-ups that started coming in after Saturday's operation, we were pretty much left to ourselves. And though I was NOT able to do much except baby sit, I just took it literally as a break, with all the upcoming heavy work load this coming month end.

Now we're home and I've got a patient hubby to sort of tend to. :) I envy the two week hiatus though.Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-70792272389641482462012-11-15T11:39:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:17:27.633+08:00Almost HiatusI so don't like this.. I was really determined to keep on posting once more, only to fall to the clutches of time management. There's just to many too do :( I ended up with several blog drafts and none posted. Darn. But none of that anymore.Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-55402131779573539662012-11-11T09:33:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:17:27.821+08:00My MRI ExperienceYesterday I was finally able to complete my requested MRI. This is due to my lower back pain which I complained to a chiropractor, but because of his relatively expensive (but very helpful) treatment, I really have to look for cheaper yet as effective alternative. So no choice but to randomly choose an Orthopedic from Maxicare's roster.

The MRI schedule requested me to be in the laboratory 30 minutes early. Mom and Busy Boy went with me for support. As soon as I was under, they'd have some lola-apo bonding on the works. My schedule was 10-11am and the procedure was supposed to be 45 minutes long.

First up, I was interviewed by a resident as to why I wanted/needed an MRI, an explanation of what the procedure does, some does and don'ts and then a blood pressure check which I had to repeat because it was pretty high. Blame it on the nerves.

Then, it was on to the machine where I had to don a hospital gown. The lady radiologist was nice enough to let me leave my shirt on since you can be cold and as much as possible, DO NOT move. I was given a headphone like gadget to keep the noise down, pillow, a blanket over me and pillow under my knees so as not to strain my back some more.

And I was off.. inch by inch I slipped inside that big dome. I thought I'd be claustrophobic, hence the nerves, but there was about an arms span distance from my face to the 'roof'. So that's ok. Now what to do for the next 45 minutes? I couldn't sleep since I might jerk awake.. so I kept thinking of random things.. like channel surfing in my head. I tried to make a tune out of the hammering sounds I heard or the last episode of any show, and even blog posts. I wiggled my toes and fingers often so I won't be really stiff all over. Before you know it, I was done. Ms. Radiologist just had to check if my negative was blurred or not which took another 15 minutes. And finally, I was out.

Ms. Radiologist was very kind and seemed concerned enough to ask how I was after. The hard, cold surface can be pretty tough on the back but its a minute sacrifice. I get my results in 2 days and I'm hoping it won't be as bad. I'm really thankful Dad's coverage was up to it. I learned it was a whopping P9,000, more if they have to remove it.

It was a relief to see my son and mom waiting for me in the lobby. I treated them to a Starbucks drink (for a sticker) and a black pepper spam sandwich.. and we're back home to Dad.

Now we wait.. wish me luck!Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-31257669590059365032012-11-09T21:59:00.000+08:002015-03-27T23:17:27.571+08:00More HospitalityWeekend number two of going back to our friendly neighborhood hospital. This time, I got both good and not so nice news. First, I completed all the tests I had to undergo: ultrasound and the long delayed MRI. Not so nice with the former were the findings plus the inavailability of both my OB and the cardiologist. I just have to wait a little more so I can get the results and get the doctors to explain.

Keeping my fingers crossed. Will take advantage of the HMO benefits..Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-83910093154049182542012-11-07T21:49:00.000+08:002015-03-28T00:09:23.974+08:00Meet edmodoBusy Boy started using a tablet for their assignments beginning 2nd trimester last school year. This current year, they moved up a notch by loading in the actual ebooks used in classes. This prompted us to use a smaller bag since Busy Boy no longer needs to lug about 8 books daily.

Aside from the breakthrough in answering directly from the tablet, LSGH took a step further by introducing Edmodo.

From Wiki: Edmodo provides teachers and students a secure place to connect, collaborate and share content. Teachers are also able to post grades, assignments and quizzes to students. Students can submit homework and view their grades and any comments the teacher may have posted about their assignment. Teachers can also create polls and post topics for discussion among the students. Teachers can differentiate and individualize learning through the creation of sub-groups within a course.

In LSGH's case, the sub-group pertains to the actual sections of the grade level so a teacher can posts for all or to a specific class only.

I love this idea because it looks like a student's own microblog or social networking site - where you can post a status and have threaded comments - only its super school related. The reminders, tools within the site are specifically designed to monitor homework submission and upcoming tests or activities.

photo from the internet

The site has apps available in IOS or Android and a parent can create his own account. I decided to force Busy Boy to share his password and username so I can check. Since the school started using this, some of the announcements are no longer given in school. All you need to do is log in! Really cool!

Writing down homework has really come a long way from the time I was in school. So many new and interesting discoveries.. all aimed to make things easier for the student and parent. No more worries whether the copied assignment is incomplete. With so many things to do/complete during the day, we need all the help we can get.
It was about a month away from the actual date but the Dallas-Miami championships were about to start and I knew he'd want to watch it under better circumstances. One call and 30 seconds later, channel is up.

Just last week, the 2012-2013 season opened and might as well forget about the other stations.. We're glued, unless it's a sucky team playing. But knowing my husband, ALL games are interesting. And so far, the channel has not disappointed him. Up to date games, commentaries, the draft picks, fantasy and summer leagues to the ring ceremony..it's P50 a month well spent.

Not that I'm complaining.. I would rather have my boys at home than be anywhere else.. Some days, I have to fight for airtime, but more often I'm either reading or blogging or doing something else so.. ok so far.
I'd buy it as often as we'd do groceries. Reading books to me is something I should do daily. Love for reading and the smell of new book is one thing I share with my Papa.

Lack of bookshelf space and the rising cost of books have 'forced' me to look at the current craze of Ebooks. Since we need to be practical, I have since limited my purchases to books I really like.. favorite authors, continuing series and books I feel I should have. The rest.. well, what matters is I've read the book.

This series -- and genre, got me started in this wonderful new world of ebooks love affair. Cozy Mysteries have colorful covers, light plots, easy reading. This series combined two of my favorite things - cupcakes and a who dunnit mystery in a book? I was hooked.
I'm still in the market for the "perfect" reader but for now, Busy Boy's Ipad will do. I'm actually on the fence here, invest more on Ibooks with epub version or purchase a Kindle and convert all my books to mobi. For now, read and search and download while I can. Or message my friend, K for help. :)

With so many titles to choose from, this affair might actually be a permanent thing. My world revolved around his well being and the decision to choose him and his father over my career development was a decision I NEVER regretted. But, we feed him three (sometimes five) squares meal a day and can not stop him from growing up... no matter how much I want to..

in 4th grade at 9 years old

Now this once cute and cuddly boy is becoming a mini nightmare as he now asserts his choices in clothes, food, sounds to even TV shows and especially, what to do during his free time. He still obeys orders but only to a minimum point, unless his Dad or I are already nearing angry and if eyes could roll even higher, his would be at the back of his head by now.

Unlike Western cultures where we fear more, growing up in the Philippines, and studying in a sectarian Catholic school has its advantages. For now, I don't worry on smoking, internet and cellphone usage and girls yet, simply because my son is still young (he's still a baby!!!) My issues at the onset are:

a) Getting ready for Body Changes - its coming.. sooner than I think. And I'm not just talking about height and weight. I already noticed hair in the legs and upper lip. And is he ready for that all important C next summer.

b) The need for Independence - to do 'stuff' on his own. Its just that its hard not to hover and check. I suffer separation anxiety more than my son did during those 'big moments'. Again, I can't do anything but accept and welcome the change.

c) Respect Authority / Follow Rules - We've lived by rules our whole lives. As early as now, Dad and I tell Busy Boy, if you don't want to follow the rules, you are free to step out of the house. We play together and do stuff together but there's a line that shouldn't be crossed. Busy Boy also needs to be reminded that its not only us that he needs to obey, but all older family members.

So what's a mom got to do?

First, trust. I should take that leap of faith that we taught him well enough to know what is right from wrong.

Next, be ready to listen. Even at a young age, Dad and I seek out his opinion on things and we taught him to speak. There will be times he won't want to talk, but when he does, I will be 'drop everything, what is it' there.

Then, don't shout and scream.. I really need to work on this..

Lastly, spend time with each other. I think my husband and I have made a home where my son would want to come home to after school. I'd like to keep it that way so that its the best place he'd rather be. We've still got a few years to go where Busy Boy may want to spend time with his parents... and maybe extend that to a 'bonding time' when he's an adult.

There's s no clear cut formula on how to raise a tween.. and Lord knows what will come next raising a tween. It will be just like going back that day in time, when a 6.6 pound baby was thrust in arms and I had no I idea what to do next, this time, hand in hand with squirmier tween, I shall be learning once more...

Now what?? :)Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2173920854929152193.post-86314550143394033672012-11-01T15:38:00.000+08:002015-03-28T00:10:36.880+08:00

As with any new company you join, a new colleague to work with or a place to visit, a little history goes a long way in helping one understand who you're dealing with, how you came to be and most importantly, why you are the way you are.
My 20's - Age of Discovery

The first half can be described as wild. Newly employed, having my own money, meeting new people, going places, buying things. Before I knew it, I was deep in credit card debt and the receiving end of an ugly office drama. So I shook it off, buckled down to work, started believing in myself and not caring what others thought. I went back to who I was and I couldn't be happier.

The second half was all about love. Meeting, dating, going out, eating out, sex, saving up and planning for the future. I met new friends, had better colleagues. It was about the two of us. All I wanted was to have my own family.
My 30's - Beginnings and Endings

Now married and my son has been born, I was learning about the joys and pains of motherhood, of running a household, on becoming an OFW wife, on travelling outside the country on your own. We took out a loan for the house and car and my boy beginning his schooling. I learned how to drive. The family life I wanted is here.

The middle part of my 30's were my turbulent years. When the dust began to settle, everything was becoming routine. And that's when I was introduced to death. My papa, two aunts, three uncles and my boss. All in 3 years. People who were my major influences. Then the office suspension even if I am of no fault. I just wished everything will soon be over.

Ending my 30's was better... family is fine, financially better off, trying out cooler gadgets and being more confident with myself. I finally decided I want to blog again.

Life Begins at 40

The past 20 years had both best and worst memories.. Am now at the threshold for the next 40 more years. Tally ho!
Of course, there would no visible results after 2 days but I was able to survive the day with rice during lunch only.  I will re-check my measurements after a week.  I also need to trim down too much snacking.  I should not 'compensate'.Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14219995089772833492noreply@blogger.com0
