When Dad announced last week that he became a signatory in their office, I knew we would eventually make a trip to the bookstore and buy a pen. I don’t know, call it serious, dedication or what to this new responsibility, that he had to buy a pen.
And not just any pen. But a whopping new Parker Facet!
If I could reach his head and knock some sense into it I would’ve. :( I just feel its too much for a pen. Even if it was reimbursable.
In one meeting at work ages ago, I was able to sit across our then EVP, Ms. Lili and she was signing a few Manager’s Checks. She was signing with an uncapped almost half empty Panda ballpen. To see a very powerful lady sign documents and checks worth millions with that, was an eye opener for me. I realized its the signature that matters and not the writing instrument.
I guess, our (Philippine) culture dictates something else. Some actually feel the need to match their pens with personality or position. I became a signatory since 1997 and I admit I went through using my share of Pilot pens and Parkers (jotter only) to the now popular gel pens and yes, even Hello Kitty ball pens. I also keep the Parker pen my sister gave me for my birthday in my bag for those unexpected sign here moments.
Bottom line, I’m more fulfilled if I don’t lose the ball pen and finish the ink entirely. I wouldn’t dream of wasting a nice pen on office documents either. These days, I use Super Writer SemiGel for a grand total of P7.50 :) We do have office supplies but would you believe we use Reynolds?
But going back to Dad. He works hard and he has risen from the ranks. He deserves any pen he wants. Besides, he had it monogrammed with his initials which is fortunately, the same as mine.. hehe.. :) So who knows? :)
